Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, Holmdel, NJ | Family Baptism

Their Session: We met on a chilly winter morning. Lauren wanted to capture her son George’s baptism in her Greek church, along with her twin nieces. I always appreciate seeing what people believe and hold close. I was in awe at the artwork and design of her church Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Holmdel, NJ.

When I asked her why baptizing George was important to her family, Lauren shared, "In the Greek church, baptism is the most important sacrament. Unlike in the Catholic Church, the baby receives baptism, communion and confirmation all at once. The Greek faith and Greek culture are very closely linked and we wanted George to have that foundation."

Lauren shared that her and her husband Chris picked the name George in a way to honor his Papou (grandfather). She mentioned that typically in the Greek culture, the firstborn grandson is named after his paternal grandfather and Chris felt very strongly about this. They agreed to name him George and Lauren chose his middle name Alexander.

I noticed that some of her family members were emotional at the baptism. When I asked her what significance baptizing George and her nieces had to their family, she shared, "Baptizing our children together was so special for us. Our nieces were born very premature at 24 weeks and barely survived. Chris and Steve share a special bond as brothers and the kids were born 3 weeks apart so it was such a blessing to celebrate them all together."

Lauren: I'm so honored that you and your family allowed me into your lives to document this intimate event for you all. I love seeing how close your family is and knowing the importance of this day for you truly touches my heart!
